Decisionmaking : Applications to Non - Truth - Conditional

چکیده
Compressed Abstract: This paper submits an approach to broadly non-truth-conditional aspects of meaning in natural language which interprets`pragmatics' substantively: in the way of C.S. Peirce and F.P. Ramsey, as a synonym for decision-theory. We outline (i) basic assumptions, (ii) some relations to other approaches, (iii) a range of results wide enough to justify the termàpproach'. A key notion is`relevance', explicated and related to information in the traditional, stochastic way.

Information, Negation, and Paraconsistency
This paper begins by arguing that a truth conditional approach to the semantics for relevant logic is unnatural. Rather, we should adopt an informational semantics. On this view, the indices in the RoutleyMeyer semantics are situations, which can be said either to contain or not contain, particular pieces of information. Valid inference, then, is seen as information preservation, not truth pres...
متن کاملAppositive Relative Clauses, At-issueness, and Timing in Discourse
It is standardly assumed that there is a distinction between truth-conditional content (e.g. entailment) and non-truth-conditional content (e.g. presupposition and implicature). Another, more recent distinction is made between at-issue content (the “main point” of the utterance) and not-at-issue content (in some sense “secondary” to the main point). Ever growing evidence that those two di...
متن کاملConditional Dependence in Longitudinal Data Analysis
Mixed models are widely used to analyze longitudinal data. In their conventional formulation as linear mixed models (LMMs) and generalized LMMs (GLMMs), a commonly indispensable assumption in settings involving longitudinal non-Gaussian data is that the longitudinal observations from subjects are conditionally independent, given subject-specific random effects. Although conventional Gaussian...
متن کاملEpistemic modality and truth conditions
Within the linguistics literature it is often claimed that epistemic modality, unlike other kinds of modality, does not contribute to truth-conditional content. In this paper I challenge this view. I reanalyze a variety of arguments which have been used in support of the non-truth-conditional view and show that they can be handled on an alternative analysis of epistemic modality. # 2006 Elsevie...
متن کاملDale Jacquette CONUNDRUMS OF CONDITIONALS IN CONTRAPOSITION
A previously unnoticed metalogical paradox about contraposition is formulated in the informal metalanguage of propositional logic, where it exploits a reflexive self-non-application of the truth table definition of the material conditional to achieve semantic diagonalization. Three versions of the paradox are considered. The main modal formulation takes as its assumption a conditional that arti...
